What we do

Categories: Tags:

Quite often we get asked “What do you do?”

Whilst we could give a simple answer, such as “Almost everything to do with diving”, that doesn’t really create interest or inspire anyone to get into diving. We have started to use the phrase “the centre for diving”, as that is what we do, we dive a lot.

So what do we do?

Our main aim is to go diving and to get others diving. Whether it is shallow or deep, wreck or reef, squidge or spidge, we aim to help you get diving and go diving ourselves.

On a day to day basis we:

  • teach scuba diving courses
  • escort qualified divers
  • take divers out on our dive boats
  • service equipment
  • test cylinders
  • sell new and used diving equipment
  • drink a lot of tea

We also do a lot of more fun stuff, not so day to day

  • hunt for new wrecks
  • look for new dive sites in the area
  • organise underwater litter picks
  • help with maritime archaeological projects
  • visit historic wreck sites
  • remove ‘ghost fishing’ nets and pots
  • help with scientific research projects
  • write for magazines
  • work with students on various media projects
  • film and photograph the underwater world
  • dive for scallops and oysters
  • drink more tea

The list of things we get involved with and have got involved with, is really varied, it is a lot more extensive than this list. The work we do with a professional maritime archaeologist and author, a professional marine biologist and an award winning cameraman is forever evolving and increasing. Not to forget our SCUBA magazine columnist and our numerous TV appearances.

Our Location

Categories:

Based at Mabe just outside of Falmouth we are easy to get to but not easy to find, mainly due to a confused post code. The post code given to us also exists a mile away!  TR10 9HY is correct on Google Maps but we now use TR10 9JH, as sat navs will bring you very close.

Trenoweth Business Park is fairly new and not known by many locals, yet, it was originally Tinpit Quarry. It is now a business park with several self storage shipping containers and four industrial units. We occupy two of the industrial units between our businesses, as well as one of the storage containers.

The easiest way to get to Trenoweth Business Park is from the Asda roundabout on the Penryn bypass. Take the Mabe turning up the hill then turn left at the crossroads. Follow the road about 1/2 a mile out of the village until the road bears sharp left, as it bears left there are two turnings. Trenoweth Business Park is 100m up the first right turn, sign posted as ‘Trenoweth’. The business park is through the large metal gates on the left, our shop and dive school are in the building to the left as you reach the gravel car park.

Our Background

Categories: Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Atlantic Scuba was founded in 2007 by Mark Milburn. From very small beginnings, from a shed in his garden, it has grown. There is now a well stocked retail shop, next to the extensively equipped dive school. Located on the outskirts of Mabe near Penryn/Falmouth, there is comfortable seating for people to visit and chat. Atlantic Scuba has it’s own Dive Charter Boat too, with a second one on it’s way.

Before Atlantic Scuba was officially started, it was known as something that was going to happen. In 2002 Mark bought his first major diving acquisition, Sub Aqua World in Port Gaverne. Sub Aqua World was a small dive centre, offering boat dives from their RHIB, air fills and PADI scuba diving courses. The boat had already been sold but the rest of the centres equipment, was later to become the start of Atlantic Scuba. It was also in 2002 that Mark bought his first RHIB, Wreck Hunter. Wreck Hunter was sold to help pay for the purchase of Stingray, it was subsequently bought back for use as a support and dive site search vessel.

After the official formation of Atlantic Scuba, premises were sought. Eventually, a suitable location was found at Mabe. Trenoweth Business Park was a disused quarry, owned by a local ex dive boat skipper, Shaun. Shaun used to own and operate Redeemer, followed by Autumn Dream (renamed Cousin Jack), trading as Bay Marine. Mark had dived on Shaun’s boats for several years and decided to take on a unit in his yard. Six months later, Atlantic Scuba expanded and took on the unit next to it, for equipment servicing and testing under the name of Cornwall Cylinder Testing. CCT started with the small compressor from Sub Aqua World and a very small air bank. Since then it has upgraded it’s compressor and currently runs a larger Bristol compressor, with the small one as a back up. At the time of writing, we have just purchased two Compair 5409 compressor from ILFSAC (Ilfracombe and North Devon Sub Aqua Club), who have upgraded.  The air bank grew when we acquired Bill Bowen’s air bank from Penzance, he retired from filling cylinders after 35 years on the quay so no longer needed it.

A year or so later, some of the assets of Whitsand Bay Divers were purchased, including it’s compressor, air bank, mixing panels and some of the school equipment and shop’s stock. Not long after that, most of the school equipment of Starfish Divers was also purchased. The next acquisition was the RHIB of Starfish Divers, called ‘Starfish Divers 1’. The Starfish Divers RHIB was originally Looe Divers boat, ‘Looe Diver 1’. It is now known as just ‘Starfish’, which fits quite well name wise as a sister vessel with Stingray.

Weather & Sea Conditions

Categories:

Q. What happens if the weather is not suitable for diving?

A. The weather can affect divers in different ways. Rain can help flatten and waves on the sea but it also brings silt down the rivers, which can then affect visibility. Wind will affect the surface conditions which can churn up shallow waters or make the access to and from a boat too dangerous. To help with this we have access to an indoor heated swimming pool, for all confined water training. For Open Water training, luckily we have 2 coastlines in Cornwall facing opposite ways, so there is usually somewhere not too affected by the wind to dive. read more →
